AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.
Hello, my name is Emmanuel Ogunjumo. I am ‘Third Culture Child’ who has lived in four continents. I was born in West Africa (Nigeria). Moved to Asia (Oman) when I was 10, moved to Europe (England) at 14, then moved to North America (U.S) before my 18th birthday. So, I guess I am a citizen of the world who just happens to be living in Houston at the moment.
What inspired you to author this book?
Seven years ago, after another failed relationship, I humbled myself and decided to go on a self-improvement journey and to learn all I could about relationships. That failed relationship really hurt, so I made up my mind to never go through that kind of pain again if I could help it. As I grew and learned more about what makes relationships work, I developed a deep desire to help others achieve their relationship goals. I started by coaching and counseling people, which was great, but I wanted to reach as many people as I could. This book is the culmination of my desire to share the insights I have gained over the years with as many people so they can avoid the mistakes I have made and give themselves a chance at an exceptional relationship.
Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?
The essence of this book is about learning to love better – something I have done over the past seven years and continue to do, and something I want the reader to do. I think the book cover captures that well. The book represents the learning, and the folded page represents the love.
Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?
This is a tough one. Personally, outside of Jesus, I would have to say my parents. They have always believed in me and supported my goals and dreams. As a writer, I would have to say Apostle Paul. I love how he interweaves the conceptual and practical in a way that gives the reader a full picture.
What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?
The biggest obstacle I faced was time. In between juggling the day job, family duties, counselling and coaching, it was difficult to stay on task. But is was a blessing in disguise as it forced me to really look at my schedule to prioritize better and do a better job managing my time.
Tell your readers about your book.
101 No Frills Relationship Lessons You Need to Learn Before You Marry dives into the lives of 20 people in the bible to share profound and practical relationship insights from their lives. It is written in a way that is fun to read, easy to digest, and simple to understand. It gives a fresh and needed perspective on relationships. The best thing about it is that it is written with the reader in mind. The book will help you learn from other people’s mistakes and successes so that you can position yourself to have the best relationship you can have. It also has a life application and prayer meditation so you can seal what you learn in your heart. Whether single, engaged or married, you will get something from this book.
Who is your target audience, and why?
While anyone can gain something from this book, my primary target audience are those who are single and have a desire to be married. I want them to be truly prepared for marriage and avoid the pain and suffering that a lack of preparation brings. As Benjamin Franklin puts it: If you fail to prepare, then you are preparing to fail.
My secondary audience are those who are newly married and having marital problems. This book will help identify what you are doing wrong and where to put your focus.
If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?
It cuts through the fluff and gives the relationship advice you need to have a happy relationship that lasts.
What do you consider your greatest success in life?
That is a tough one since I still have a lot of my life to live (at least I hope so). So far, my greatest success, the thing that has brought me the most joy, is seeing friends relationships change as they apply godly principles to their marriage. To know that I am a part of that both humbles me and still blows my mind.
What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?
I bring a different and fresh perspective. I unearth obscure truth from the Bible and explain it in a way that people can really connect. When a person reads my writing, they will have many aha-moments. This is the difference with what I write: I take it from head knowledge to heart knowledge. And that is what makes a difference in relationships.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
When I make the writing about me, I have writers block. When I make it about my reader and the life change I really want them to experience, I find that my writer’s block goes away.
What one piece of advice do you have for new authors.
Just start writing! Concentrate on your message to your readers first. Worry about the style and editing later.
Tell your readers anything else you want to share.
I have put my heart and soul into this book. I don’t want you to find this as just another good read. I want you to really take the lessons to heart put them into practice. My desire is for your relationship to thrive. I know this book will help you accomplish that goal. When it does, please go drop me a line. I would love to hear your story.
